“It it true that those we meet can change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards, even unto our names. Witness Simon who is called Peter, Mathew also known as Levi, Nathaniel who si also Bartholomew, Judas, not Iscariot, who took the name Thadeus, Simeon who went by Niger, Saul who became Paul.”
– Life of Pi
Some people change us profoundly and this is why I believe good mentors are crucial in our lives. These people inspire us to discover our strengths, push us to take the road less traveled and most of all, give us the courage to continue our journey when the going gets tough.
Professor Lee who teaches religion at Calvin College have continuously encouraged me to love God and the scripture. If you sit in his class, he manifests his love for scripture and it is contagious. He has this extraordinary insight of the Bible (especially the Old Testament) and not only is he an excellent scholar, but an excellent teacher (but current students be aware, he is not an easy grader. B in his class will be equivalent to an A).
He would argue that he has been high numerous times reading the scripture. This meaning that whenever he discovers a new insight he feels an ecstasy like experience so why take drugs?
So here I am off to church today, hoping to encounter a profound meeting with the Savior and hoping the preacher would dose me with some ecstasy through the scriptures.
